Addiction Won’t Wait For The COVID-19 Crisis To End 46

The federal government has made clear that the US death toll from Coronavirus will be staggering and our hearts go out to all who are affected by our current pandemic as well as those suffering huge financial losses. In parallel to the current crisis, we have another public health emergency that will go on long after the virus is under control- addiction. In recent years, overdoses kill more people than guns, car crashes, or HIV/AIDS ever did in a single year in the US.

For those who are in a life-and-death battle with substance abuse, addiction won’t wait for the shutdowns to end. Treatment can’t either.

Doctors are now warning that the coronavirus has escalated chronic use and deaths for drug and alcohol users who are experiencing increased isolation and shuttered rehabilitation programs who have closed their doors. Indeed, alcohol sales are booming as people look for ways to address boredom and anxiety – they shot up 55% in the third week of March as compared to the same time last year, according to Nielsen. Although illicit drug sales on the black market go undocumented, they mirror the same truth.

As the world faces these unprecedented threats, we here at Cornerstone are sure there is an opportunity for those struggling in this crisis to get into recovery. While 70% of the world is scheduled to spend the next 30 days indoors, we are sure that this time should be spent being somewhere safe—why not somewhere productive as well?

Thankfully, treatment for addiction and mental health has been classified as an essential business. Regardless of lockdowns and stay-at-home orders, caring for loved ones and getting them the help they need is as crucial as ever.

Cornerstone is a safe haven during this time. We have had zero infections, and are conducting a rigorous screening of all incoming clients before admittance. We are closely following CDC guidance for facilities such as ours and are as vigilant as ever about the health and safety of our clients, our staff, and our community.

If you are ready for a change, there is no better time to take a hiatus from work or school than now. You can keep yourself safe, keep your loved ones away from additional risk of exposure, and come out of this thing the best possible version of yourself. You may look back one day and say “ Remember when the coronavirus pandemic happened back in 2020 and people couldn’t buy toilet paper? That was the year I got sober and changed my life”.

If you are ready for a change, get in touch today. We would love to hear from you.
